Suicide Prevention

Suicide prevention is an important area of focus in todays schools.  According to the Center for Disease Control Website:  in 2010, 34 cases of youth suicide were directly related to bullying.  There is documentation of an 8 year old student who completed suicide in the United States.  His suicide note was written in crayon.

Suicide threats are not to be taken lightly.  When a student reports a desire to harm themselves in any manner, students and school staff must act quickly and report the incident to the Principal and School Counselor.

Mercer County Schools Policy states that when a student introduces an intent to harm themselves they must be seen and cleared by a mental health professional before they can return to school.

Talk, Walk and Tell

We are working hard to help students learn to resolve their own conflicts in school and in life.  This year we have focused hard on Talk, Walk, and Tell.  Ask your child to explain how they should handle problems that they have with others.

1.  Talk it out - (they can model the right way to talk to someone)

2.  Walk Away

3.  Tell - (Find an adult to help after you have tried step 1 and 2)

School Based Counseling Services

BIS has teamed with Southern Highlands to help our students

get additional counseling in the school setting.  If your child is

struggling with grief, anger, discipline, anxiety, depression, or

any other problems that you feel are beyond your control,

please call Mrs. Shellie at the school.  We can set up an

intake assessment and your child can recieve extra counseling

at school in a private one on one setting every Wednesday.

Most insurances will cover the cost of the therapy.

Whitethorn Primary has a part time social worker to help

address family needs that can help promote student success.

If you have any questions or need assistance please call Mrs.

     Shellie at the school.
